Pupils at a Fenland school have been going the extra mile in a bid to support their teacher’s marathon charity effort.

Cancer survivor Pam Reynolds, assistant headteacher at Alderman Payne Primary School in Parson Drove, is running the London Marathon on April 24 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

But pupils she teaches in Years 5 and 6 will have already run the 26.2 mile distance ahead of the big day in a relay-style run around the school playing field.

So far the 25 pupils have run a total of 10 miles, completing nine laps of the field for every mile.

By the time they finish the marathon challenge they will have completed a bumper 234 laps between them.

The pupils are being sponsored by friends and family, with money raised going towards a school and parent council project for new outdoor changing rooms and toilet facilities.

“They have been really enthusiastic about me running the marathon and wanted to do something to support me,” said Ms Reynolds.

“They are enjoying the running and really look forward to doing it each week.

“They have been great encouraging each other on, too.”

Ms Reynolds, 46, was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. She was successfully treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and took up running as part of her rehabilitation.

Her aim at the time was to complete the Race for Life for Cancer Research UK, but she has since run several 10km races and half-marathons in aid of the cause.

Now she is gearing up for what will be her first-ever marathon after successfully gaining a ballot entry.

“I was given the all-clear after five years in remission; I was lucky,” she said.

“This terrible disease has touched too many of my loved ones, family and friends. Cancer Research works tirelessly to find cures; survival rates are getting better, but a cure needs to be found.”

As part of her build-up, Ms Reynolds completed her longest distance so far last weekend when she took part in a 20-mile run at the Milton Keynes Festival of Running.

“It was very tiring but great fun.

“I feel ready for the marathon now,” she said.
