Podiatry team get off their feet and on their bikes

A team of NHS Podiatrists are taking part in the “Wiggle Spring Saddle Sportive”, a 38 mile bike ride, on Sunday, in aid of the Woodlands Centre, Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The team will start and finish at the Rowley Mile Newmarket Racecourse, and take the team through Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex.

Sara Hill, Podiatry Manager for Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust, said: “’Team Athletes Foot’ is a group of podiatrists from my teams across Cambridgeshire who annually challenge ourselves and fundraise for local causes. This year we are supporting the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon after a member of our staff had a cancer scare and visited the centre for a while.

“We have been training hard for this ride with bike rides of up to 20 miles a time and team members have been cycling into work and from Huntingdon to Cambridge on a daily basis.”

The team consisting of Sara Hill, Podiatry Manager and four other members of the Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust Podiatry Team: Andrew Frances Flores, Clare Dean, Darren Martin and Jo Hood. Also cycling and supporting the team will be members of their families; Sara will be accompanied by her 13-year-old twin nephews Callam and Rhys for the ride.

Lynda Hall, Lead Nurse Manager from the Woodlands Centre, said: “We are extremely pleased that the ‘Athletes Foot’ team are helping support our cause. We are raising funds to build an extension as the existing unit was built 15 years ago and with the increase in cancer diagnosis and much improved treatments, we have now outgrown our facility.

“The new centre will cost around £1 million, of which we have already raised £300,000. We are always on the look out for other ways of raising the money needed and we welcome other organisations or funding bodies to contact us. We wish the podiatry team all the best for the ride.”

The Woodlands Centre is based on the Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust site, and is a day centre used mainly for chemotherapy and cancer related treatments. If you would like to help the Woodlands Centre with its fundraising, please contact the team on 01480-363500.

The podiatry team is looking to raise at least £500 and if you would like to support the team you can go to the Justgiving website: www.justgiving.com/teamAthletesFoot or text foot94 plus the amount you would like to donate to 70070.
