PLANS to reopen a rail link between March and Wisbech were dealt a blow last week when Fenland District Council ruled out taking a role in the project.
A 74-page document, titled ‘Getting on Track: Rail Development Strategy’, outlined a 20-year approach for rail development.
It was presented to Cabinet on Thursday and members approved its adoption. They also approved the formation of a Community Rail Partnership, a way for local communities to have greater involvement in the railways.
In the report, it was stated that while Getting on Track supports that the Wisbech to March line should come back into use, the strategy is “primarily concerned with improvements to rail lines and stations that are already in operation” and it is beyond its scope to deliver a new line.
However, it will support the work of organisations to take plans forward for reopening the line.
