Extra help is being offered by Fenland District Council to people on housing benefit who are struggling to meet their housing costs. It follows a surge in applications for assistance over the past few months.

In April, FDC was given extra funding from the Government to enable it to provide some short-term help to people whose housing benefit does not meet their full needs.

Following its DHP surgeries at the shop in July, the council saw a big rise in applications. The number of DHPs awarded in August alone matched the awards for the previous three months combined.

The council is encouraging anyone experiencing real difficulties to apply for some short-term financial help through its Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) scheme. The awards are discretionary; all applicants receive an initial financial assessment and, where appropriate, they are advised of other benefits they may be entitled to and encouraged to make changes in the way they manage their money to help their situation.

Every Monday and Friday from 14th October 2013, a DHP officer will be at the Fenland @ your service shop in Wisbech to help customers make a claim. Alternatively, you can still see one of our advisors at any of our shops in Wisbech, March and Whittlesey or the Chatteris Hub; you can also contact FDC on 01354 654321 for an application; or go online at www.fenland.gov.uk/dhp
