Fenland MP Steve Barclay wants action on the “disgraceful mess” left by contractors at the mothballed Tesco store site in Chatteris.

He has written to the company and also Fenland District Council after being contacted by a resident whose home overlooks the play park off Larham Way.

The woman, who does not want to be named, said contractors failed to complete work on the park, leaving it dug up, and now overgrown with weeds.

She claims weeds growing on the banks of the underpass, which links the unoccupied supermarket with the nearby residential areas, are so high she can see them over her six-foot garden fence.

She also said weeds on the new roundabout are proving a hazard for motorists by blocking their view.

In a letter to Mr Barclay, she said: “This is a disgrace.”

Mr Barclay asked the council to help and also questioned what powers of enforcement were available to ensure the contractors complete the park area.

He wrote to Tesco demanding action and asked for an update on the unoccupied store, which Tesco will have to start paying business rates for from October.
