NORFOLK: Leader elected

At a special meeting of Norfolk County Council today (Monday 25 February), Cllr Bill Borrett was elected as Leader of the Council.

Council voted by 40 votes to five, with two abstensions, to elect Cllr Borrett as Leader after he was proposed by Cllr Graham Plant and seconded by Cllr Bev Spratt. No other name was put forward.

Cllr Borrett’s election as Leader followed his election on Friday as Chairman of the County Council’s majority Conservative Group, after which he said he did not intend to make any changes to Cabinet at this time.

Today’s Leadership election followed the resignation as Leader of Cllr Derrick Murphy at the beginning of February. Cllr Borrett, Conservative member for Elmham and Mattishall, was Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste and Transformation under Mr Murphy, and Acting Leader until his election today (25 Feb).
