There was jubilation – and a few tears – at Wisbech Grammar School this morning as pupils picked up their A Level results.

Envelopes were ripped open with anticipation and results feverishly scanned to see if the teenagers had made it into their university of choice.

And for many this was swiftly followed by celebration as their dreams were solidified and their places were secured.

Pupils will now be heading away from the Fens and spreading across the country as they take up university places to study courses from medicine to business management.

Jonny Ison was one of the shining stars of the morning, gaining four A* grades in chemistry, physics, maths and further maths. He also gained a B in AS Level economics. He will be going to Oxford University to study physics.

Head boy Sam-Henry Pressling also gained a full house of A* grades. He will study medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Lawrence Everett also received excellent grades, with three A*s in biology, chemistry and physics. He will be studying medicine at Newcastle.

As a whole, the school’s upper sixth form achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, with more than two thirds of the passes being at the top three grades, A*, A and B and with ten pupils gaining A* or A grades in three or more subjects.

Headmaster Nicholas Hammond said: “In a year when we have been told that high grades would be harder to achieve it is fantastic to see that our upper sixth form students have performed at such a high level.

“The A* to B pass rate of 69% means that the vast majority of our students will go on to take up places at their first choice universities and that top grades are the norm for Wisbech Grammar School students.

“These results reflect the hard work that the students have put into their studies and the excellent support that they have received from their teachers. Particular congratulations go to the students who achieved A* and A grades in three or more subjects and those who achieved A* grades in all of their subjects.”
