An appeal has been made for people to respect Downham’s cemetery after “despicable” people have been stealing from the graves.
Marion Howard has hit out at the “rotten” people who have stolen from a relative’s grave in the Rouse’s Lane Cemetery recently.
Mrs Howard says items have previously been taken from her grandmother’s grave but now her former husband’s plot has also been affected.
In a letter to the Lynn News she said: “My children are upset enough about losing their much-loved dad and their stepdad. They don’t need this sort of thing happening.
“Also we have a friend whose parents are in the cemetery and several pots have been taken from their graves.
“It is despicable, their hands should drop off.
“They obviously have not got feelings for anything or anybody.
“They are rotten to the core and I hope that if they lose someone close to them, they will realise the impact of their actions.”
The cemetery is cared for by Downham Burial Board and the chairman, John Fox, has also echoed Mrs Howard’s sentiments.
Town mayor Mr Fox said: “People who steal from graves are despicable. I have no time for them.
“I would urge people to show some respect.
“These are personal items left for personal reasons and this can be really upsetting for the families.”
But Mr Fox also advised that technically personal trinkets should not be left on graves to help with the good maintenance of the cemetery.
