CITIZEN readers are being asked for ideas to save Mepal Outdoor Centre, which is on the brink of closure.
Graden Smith, administrator, said: “All will be lost in the next few months unless sufficient funds are available to keep the centre float through the winter and a new organisation is found to run it. The centre will run out of cash on October 31.
“All of us involved are desperately sad to see such an amazing place with so much potential being shut but, given the time scale, there does not appear to be any viable alternative.”
The centre is on the shore of a 20-acre lake and offers a range of clubs courses and activities in sailing, canoeing, raft buidling, rock climbing, windsurfing, high ropes, target shooting, team building, archery and more. There is also residential accommodation and a cafe.
Everyone has worked hard to increase the income over the summer but the weather and an algae problem means there isn’t enough money to keep it going.
A request for £85,000 from East Cambs District Council has been turned down - a decision the council said has not been taken lightly.
• Ideas to save the centre should be emailed to email@example.com for the attention of the Trustee chairperson.
