A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a shed fire that sent black acrid smoke billowing across Benwick.

The fire, which was reported at 9.15pm, spread to a nearby bungalow in Chapel Garden and set alight heating oil that was in the roof space.

A 15-year-old boy from the March area was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed and stay inside to avoid breathing in the thick smoke given off by the fire.

Firefighters had to cut away at the property to fully extinguish the fire with two jets, one hose reel and two hydrants.

A thermal imaging camera was also used to check neighbouring properties to ensure the fire had not spread.

A full fire investigation will be taking place today (Friday) to determine the cause of the fire.
