The new Wisbech Tesco finally opened its doors on Thursday.
Customers were queuing outside for the 8am opening, keen to see what the Tesco Extra has to offer.
The official opening was done at 10am, with MP Steve Barclay and 11-year-old Nicole Cohen cutting the ribbon. Nicole, who attends Leverington Primary Academy, had her design chosen to grace 3,000 hessian bags that were given out to customers to mark the opening. She also received £25 in vouchers.
Her school was presented with £250 and Wisbech Sea Cadets and Wisbech and District Cancer Support were both given £500 by the supermarket giant.
The store seems to have gone down well with customers too.
Jeanette Shaffer, from Outwell, said: “I like the underground parking and the store is a nice size. I’m liking it so far.”
Edward and Elizabeth Gregory, of Walton Highway, said the store was “excellent” and Shirley Fisher from Terrington St John added: “It’s good to have a change and this will be good for Wisbech.”
Store manager Kevin Chestnutt was delighted with the turnout.
He said: “It’s very exciting. I’m very proud of the store and staff. And the council have done a great job getting us here.”
Sean Moore, First Lieutenant of Wisbech Sea Cadets said: “We would like to thank Kevin and his team for their generous donation. Our cadets will be thrilled that we are on target to refurbish one of our boats, which is in need of a few repairs. We look forward to building on this relationship with our local Tesco store.”
Anita Barker, Chairman of the Wisbech & District Cancer Support Group said: “Tesco have always supported our group by allowing us to fundraise in store. We are delighted to accept this £500 donation and look forward to continuing our relationship at the new Extra store.”
Steve Barclay said: “It is welcome news that a national retailer like Tesco is investing in our community and that 108 new jobs have been created. This is a further step forward in developing a stronger local economy and offering shoppers new facilities.”
Tesco is the first development on the Cromwell Retail Park site to open. The Light Cinema is due to open in May, with restaurants giraffe and Frankie & Benny’s lined up as well.
