THIEVES have caused flooding at the Salvation Army Citadel in Wisbech after stealing lead from the roof.
The damage was only discovered on Monday morning when church members “walked in and started squelching on the carpet”.
Major Rob Smart discovered the kitchen and foyer had flooded, causing an estimated £4,000 worth of damage to the building.
He said: “The lead they took from the roof left quite a big hole around the vents. The surveyor said it would cost in the region of £4,000 to put right. Ironically, the stolen lead is probably only worth about £500.”
It is not known exactly when the lead was taken, but Major Smart believes it was sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Emergency repairs have now been carried out to make the building watertight and the Salvation Army are waiting to hear from their insurers about making proper repairs.
A metal gate was also stolen from the premises; it is not known whether this theft happened at the same time.
Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to call the police on 0345-4564564 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555111.
