A dedicated Wisbech volunteer has been presented with a top regional award.

Arthur Smart, 67, a former BT worker, was presented with the East of England Diabetes UK Volunteer of the Year award at the charity’s regional Inspire Awards, in Hertfordshire.

Mr Smart was also presented with the Campaigning and Raising Awareness Award at the event.

He is a key member of the Wisbech Diabetes UK Local Group and also shares his experience of living with Type 2 diabetes to help and support others.

Mr Smart speaks at various events to raise awareness and supports the charity’s prevention work by undertaking risk assessments.

He said: “I’m surprised and delighted to receive these awards from Diabetes UK. I thoroughly enjoy volunteering for the charity and hope that I can help others in a small way.”

Regional head Sharon Roberts said: “Arthur is a very worthy winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award. He goes above and beyond what any charity could expect of a volunteer.”
