Tributes to Father Eddie Murphy

TRIBUTE has been paid to Wisbech Parish Priest Father Eddie Murphy (59), who died on Friday in a car accident near Waterford in Ireland.

Fr Eddie, who had been priest at Our Lady and St Charles Catholic Church in Wisbech less than a year, was in Dublin for a meeting of the Rosminian priests.

He was travelling South to spend a few days with his mother and family when the accident happened.

His funeral Mass was due to be celebrated yesterday (Tuesday) at the Rosminian Retreat House, Glencomeragh, with burial in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

After hearing the news, local Parish Council chairperson Isabella Alecock said parishioners were in a state of shock and disbelief. A memorial service is to be held at Our Lady and St Charles in the future.

A delegation, including the parish secretary Veronica Marsden, planned to travel to Ireland to attend the funeral.

Fr Eddie, who was born in Paddington, London, of Irish parents joined the Rosminians as a young man but it was only about ten years ago he set his sights on becoming a priest.

Wisbech was his second appointment as pastor following a short period at Neath in South Wales.

Expressions of sympathy have been received from the other churches in the town. Canon Matthew Bradbury, Rural Dean of the Anglican Communion wrote: “Father Eddie impressed me as a gentle and loving shepherd who knew his people and offered teaching and sacrament in a way which embraced everyone.”

Parishioners were expected to gather for prayer in the church at the time of the funeral.
