A FENLAND man will feature in a BBC television programme being screened tonight (Wednesday).
Adam Thompson (23) is starring in the second episode of Be Your Own Boss, a BBC Three show that sees budding entrepreneurs trying to impress the co-founder of Innocent Smoothies Richard Reed.
Mr Reed has £1 million to invest in new businesses and Adam, along with his business partner Jeffrey Postlethwaite, believes their venture – Twists Pasta Bar – has got what it takes.
Jeff came up with the idea of a healthy fast food chain and Adam – whose parents Kay Thompson and Sean Thompson live in Benwick – really liked it.
“We had talked about setting it up for a while and then the opportunity came to test the market free for three months,” Adam said. “Once we had given that a go and proved there was a market for our idea we set upon opening a store on the high street.”
Between them they managed to get together enough capital to open a store in Huddersfield town centre. Then came the opportunity to apply for the show.
They knew they had a good idea and stood a good chance, but had no idea just how far they would get. The pair, who are in their third year at Huddersfield University, got through to the last 18 after the original field of over 1,000 new businesses were whittled down.
They were given £3,500 of Seed Capital and six weeks to develop their business idea of healthy food on the go.
Be Your Own Boss, screening on Wednesdays at 9pm for the next five weeks, follows the 18 teams as they work to make their business ideas work and bid for a share of Mr Reed’s £1 million.
“It was exciting being filmed,” Adam said. “I just hope it won’t be too embarrassing seeing myself on television!”
You will have to tune it at 9pm today to see how the pair fared and whether Mr Reed invested in Twists Pasta Bar.
