The Wisbech Food Bank opens its doors for the first time on Friday, June 7.
Food parcels will be distributed from Wisbech Baptist Church, in Hill Street, to needy people who hold a voucher.
The food bank is now is the process of collecting items to make up the parcels which will then be given to people in crisis.
People using the food bank will need to present a voucher which gives them up to three food parcels. The voucher can only be given by a official distributor that has signed up to the scheme, such as a doctor, health visitor or school.
The parcels give enough food to make three balanced meals for three days. They are made up specifically for the individuals or families, catering to the number of people in the household.
Volunteers are still being sought to help run the food bank when it gets going. The first volunteer training session took place on Wednesday evening at the Baptist Church and saw the helpers getting their first taste of working at the food bank.
Volunteers are needed in several different areas, including sorting food in the warehouse, making the food parcels and dealing with clients in the distribution centre and doing admin work.
The food bank is asking for the public’s help to get a stockpile of food built up. They have been aided by the Cambridge and King’s Lynn food banks, who have donated items from their own warehouses. Collections at local churches were also successful.
A shopping list of items has been drawn up and people are asked to buy items from the list only. Food has to be non-perishable and the food parcels are made up according to set menus.
Donations of food can be dropped off at Wisbech Baptist Church or at the Citizen office in 11 Union Street, Wisbec.
