Wisbech & District Talking Newspaper (WDTN) will be among the first charities in the country to use its own, unique personalised text code, WDTN01, to raise funds using JustTextGiving by Vodafone.

This is a free service for charities that has no set up or fundraising costs for charities, no network charges for people making donations and every penny donated goes to charity. Gift Aid can also be added to donations.

Supporters of WDTN can make donations of up to £10 by texting WDTN01 and either 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 to 70070 to make their donation. The text message is free and all of the donation will be passed to WDTN.

Isobel Shippey, secretary of WDTN said: “This is a wonderful way for us to raise money as it’s speedy, simple and spontaneous. Most people have a mobile phone these days so we expect this to be very popular with our supporters.”

WDTN is a registered charity, which consists of a group of dedicated people whose object is to relieve the blind or partially sighted, or those with some temporary or permanent incapacity or disability which makes reading a strain.

The group produces two one-hour audio cassette tapes and CDs of local news, and a one-hour magazine tape and CD of readings, interviews, poetry, information, etc each month and circulate them to around 60 people within a 10 mile radius of Wisbech. However, it also sends tapes or CDs to local people who have moved to other parts of the country but still wish to receive local news, all delivered and returned free of charge, using the Royal Mail’s Articles for the Blind postage system.

Being a charity WDTN receives no government funding and relies solely on voluntary donations to survive. The group would be grateful for donations large or small, bequests, grants, money from any fund-raising event, or financial help from local organisations, businesses or individuals. All its members are volunteers and receive no remuneration for their work.

If you know anyone who would benefit from receiving a Talking Newspaper, or you are able to make a financial contribution or would like to volunteer as a narrator, recording engineer or high-speed copyist, contact Isobel Shippey on 07883 428954 or isobel.shippey@hotmail.co .uk
