I THOROUGHLY disagree with comments in your paper by people who feel intimidated by Eastern Europeans in this town. What should be remembered is that the overwhelming majority of these immigrants go to work every week. They pay income tax and national insurance and by and large are not a drain on the public purse.
They spend their hard earned money in our shops as well as their own. The ones that have opened shops pay business rates. Imagine how many more empty shops there would be in town without them. Only a very few of them are on the dole or expect society to finance them. They are generally polite, smart and clean. Perhaps our anonymous letter writers should try giving them a smile and say ‘Hello’ - the response may surprise them.
