Insurance issues regarding near miss of flooding at Wisbech recalls to mind the ignorance of insurance companies of certain geological aspects of the Fens. Parts of the Fens are virtually unlikely to flood, especially on the ‘islands’ rising between 20 and 30 feet above the low levels.
March, Whittlesey, Chatteris and Ely are generally safe from flooding, Wisbech does not occupy an island. Insurance companies tend to regard the whole of the Fens as liable to serious flood risk. This is not so. Even the lowest areas are well protected by a drainage system second to none. At least the new barriers at Wisbech proved effective and that should count for something. These and ongoing improvements should be taken into account.
