WITH reference to your story and the comments by the spokesperson for the Alzheimer’s Society (Citizen March 30 regarding the Chatteris group).
All of us at the Friday Group were amazed to read that the Society will do their best to support us in continuing to run it. It is a pity that they did not involve us at an early stage to try to keep the group running.
We have been told that they knew a year ago that there would be no funding from the Social Care budget for this year but this was not conveyed to us at any time at numerous meetings held throughout the year.
However, thanks to some wonderful support we have received the Group will be continuing to run on Fridays in exactly the same way as it has done for the past 15 years.
We are in the process of setting up a proper community group and will be seeking funding from various sources. Roddons have kindly agreed for us to continue to use the community room and kitchen at Salem Court every Friday from 10am to 3pm.
We believe the group provides much-needed activities and stimulation for those with dementia, together with support and respite time for carers. We have members from March, Wisbech, Somersham, and Chatteris and there are still some vacancies. The cost is £6.50 for the day which includes a two-course lunch and refreshments. Carers are welcome to contact us at Salem Court or pop in for a chat.
