I was very moved by Rex Mountain’s letter about how he got over his depression and that it is an illness that is often misunderstood.
The public’s understanding of depression hasn’t changed in 30 years. Ignorance of depression goes to the very heart of Government. Evidence for this was shown when New Labour took the decision to close down every mental health day centre in Britain.
The only time I have felt that I fitted in was when I was a member of the Bowthorpe Mental Health Day Centre in Wisbech. Unfortunately, it closed in 2010.
Hopefully, celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Ruby Wax and Robbie Williams, who talk about their depression, will educate the public about this distressing condition.
