IT was the end of an era on Thursday when the doors closed at Wisbech's Queen's School.
Pupils left on Thursday and the teachers had a training day on Friday but when they all return in September it signals a fresh start.
The school will officially close over the summer holidays and re-open on September 1 as the Thomas Clarkson Commu
nity College under the government’s Freshstart programme. It has been 21 years of the Queen’s School as it currently stands and pupils spent their last day in activities, which included looking back at the school and researching their new namesake, Thomas Clarkson.
Known as Wisbech’s most famous son, this has been a special year for the town with local and national celebration of Clarkson’s anti-slavery work.
It also marks the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. New headteacher John Bennett was involved in presentations to students on Thursday to mark their achievements throughout the school year.
There was a talent show, sporting activities and time spent with form tutors.
