MANY anglers fishing Round Three of the King of the Fens series were anticipating some bumper weights after midweek reports of some fine fishing to be had.
The match was scheduled for the Coronation Channel and River Welland but match organiser John Spalton decided to put the whole match on the River Welland in the low numbers.
As it turned out, there was only one double figure weight and a lot of the field struggled for bites.
Top rod with 12lb 3oz was Mark Pollard. He took a net of skimmers on pinkie over groundbait and squatt to finish well ahead of the field. Jason Jones from March came second with two good bream and a few small skimmers to record 9lb 9oz.
One of Mark One’s young prodigies, Danny Hall, took third place with 7lb 15oz.
On the team front it was Bourne Match Group A who took the honours with 22 points, just ahead of Wades Match Group, who came second with 23.
With three rounds now fished Fox Match Stanjays are in the lead with eight points, just ahead of Bourne Match group A on nine.
Mill View Tackle AC
The Willows Pool at Decoy has long been a favourite venue for many local anglers but after a week of heavy fishing the Mill View Tackle Angling Club saw weights well below par.
Top rod was Pete Rayner. He drew peg 15 and opted for a caster and maggot approach, taking a mixed bag for 63lb 10oz.
Runner-up was Paul Priestley. He put a level 58lb to the scales, followed by Ian Crawford, who weighed in 52lb 4oz.
This weekend the club are on the Jay Pool at Rookery Farm Fishery Pidley.
Holbeach AC
The art of waggler fishing has been dismissed by many, particularly the new younger generation of anglers. Thankfully one or two clubs still maintain the tradition of waggler only events and on Sunday Holbeach AC held their annual waggler only match on the South Holland main drain.
Out in front with a net of small skimmers and roach was Nigel Claridge. He fished pinkie over groundbait and squatt to record 7lb 8oz.
The consistent Martin Holmes fished similar tactics to the winner to weigh in 6lb 8oz, followed by Jonathon Stubley. who had 5lb 4oz.
Chivers AC
Wisbech-based Chivers AC were at Fields End Fishery last weekend on the match lake. It fished reasonably well, with Joel Scott taking the honours, putting a level 50lb to the scales. Drawn on peg 21 Joel started on the feeder then switched to an up-in-the-water pole rig on sweetcorn.
John Jones came second with 38lb 2oz, followed by Zac Mappledoram with 29lb 8oz.
Headfen Fishery
Fishery manager Marcus Bailey put his local knowledge to good use on his Headfen Fishery taking top spot in the £1,500 qualifier, weighing in a fine 95lb 14oz. He fished down the middle all day, feeding 4ml pellet along with a few pieces of meat and used soft expanders on the hook.
Runner-up was the in-form Terry Moat. The Benwick rod finished with 81lb 7oz, followed by Geoff Hunt on 78lb 15oz.
Premier Foods
There were some good weights recorded in the Premier Foods club match on the Big Lake at Kingsland. Top rod with 67lb was Kevin Fysh.
