STEVE Appleby is expected to be named as Wisbech Town's new manager before the end of the week.
The former Fenmen player was among the spectators at last week's Cambs Cup game against Lekenheath at the Nest.
Appleby was a very popular player under Dick Creasey and then Roy McManus and has since been managing Skegness Town.
He said on Mond
ay. "I am very interested in the manager's job but I have heard nothing concrete as yet. With the move to the new ground next season the future looks very bright at the club."
Wisbech have had six people showing interest in the vacant role but chairman Paul Brenchley said: "Hopefully we can make an appointment by the end of this week, but only if we can get the right person for Wisbech otherwise we will wait.
"Obviously Steve Appleby is a candidate but there are still one or two things to be ironed out."
If Appleby does take the job it is quite likely that present caretaker manager Dick Creasey will still have a role to play at the club.
Ross McNeill, who was assistant manager to Gary Setchell, quit the club last Friday and said: "I thought long and hard about the decision but feel that the club are going in a different direction managerially and I wasn't going to be part of that new direction once the dust had settled.
"I have really enjoyed my time at Wisbech. The players have been great to work with and I feel proud of what myself and Setch achieved in what were fairly challenging times for the club.
"I would like to wish everybody connected with Wisbech Town the best of luck for the rest of the season and also at the new ground."
