Wisbech 5, Haverhill Rovers 1
IT WAS high fives for Wisbech as they recorded their biggest win under the managership of Roy McManus at Fenland Park on Saturday.

After two successive defeats the Fenmen produced some of their best football of the season – even without the influence of the injured Steve Appleby – to beat eighth-placed Havehill, a club in turmoil after the resignation of manager Steve Taylor recently.

A great deal of thanks must go to Dave Parsons, who was working on the Fenland Park pitch from 6.30am to get the game played after the goalmouths were waterlogged following snow.

Wisbech got off to a good start when Mark Jimson picked up the ball on the edge of the Haverhill area and lofted it into the air before heading over the goalkeeper into the net. But Haverhill should have equalised when Marcus Hunt smashed a volley over the bar from eight yards.

The Fenmen made it 2-0 almost on the stroke of half-time to start a spell of four goals in 11 minutes play. Stuart Cobb hit a first time volley from just inside the box through Haverhill defenders.

It was 3-0 two minutes into the second half when Jason Pease's cross into the box was knocked goalwards and the Haverhill goalkeeper could only parry the ball into the path of Jimson.

Five minutes later Wisbech continued the onsalught when Scott Cubberley, making a rare first team start, fed Billy Smith, who calmly tuck the ball past the advancing keeper.

It was almost as though Wisbech had saved the best for last when Darren Edey tapped in the fifth goal from three yards after 56 minutes.

Cubberley’s pass was deflected into the path of Smith, who left a Haverhill player on his backside as he threaded his way along the by-line before pulling the ball back for the simplest of chances for Edey.

The Haverhill goal did not come until the fourth minute of injury time from the penalty spot.

A delighted McManus said: "Our second and third goals could not have come at a better time and killed the game off. It was trememndous performance from us on the back of two defeats and we played some of the best footballI I have seen this season."

Wisbech scorers: Mark Jimson 2, Stuart Cobb, Billy Smith and Darren Edey.

Wisbech: Chris Horton, Lewis Cook, Jason Pease, Paul Cousins, Lee Day, Mark Jimson, Scott Cubberley, James McManus, Darren Edey, Stuart Cobb, Billy Smith.

Subs used: Tom Benjamin, Wayne Morton, Grant Rider.
