WISBECH Town skipper Gary Freear crashed through the 1,000-run barrier for the season in a very good win over in-form Sawston at Harecroft Road on Saturday.
Freear scored 87 and James Williams 42 not out as Wisbech won the Cambs Tucker League game by six wickets against a side who had beaten March and Burwell last month.
Sawstown soon found themselves three wickets down as Williams two for 37 and Ben Allspop one for 25 struck.
Chris Clarke then took four for 24 and Henry Rosier two for 15 as Sawston reached 159 all out in 45 overs.
Wisbech lost openers David Wood and David Boniface very early, but Freear and Williams came together to take the home side to the brink of victory before Freear went and the winning total was reached with just four wickets down in 31 overs.
Vice-captain Simon Freear commented: “It was a very good result for us the way Sawston have been performing lately. Gary and James batted really well to get us the runs.”
Gary Freear’s innings rounded off a very good week for the county captain who was also in good scoring form with the bat on the four-game tour in the Scarborough area.
He scored 63 against Bridlington but was upstaged by brother Simon, who made 103 in the 83-run victory.
He also hit 72 on Tuesday and Gavin Plume 49 not out in the 13-run win over Forge Valley.
On Wednesday Gary hit 110 and Dom Stannard 52 only to see their side lose on the last ball against Ebberstown.
Friday’s game at Hartsholme was rained off.
Wisbech Seconds lost by five wickets in their Hunts League encounter with Old Eastonians on Saturday.
Wisbech were bowled out for 103 and the home side made 104 for five.
Wisbech Seconds and March Seconds played a friendly on Sunday after their Fenland Trophy opposition Somersham and Leverington both called off.
March lost by 48 runs but deserve enormous credit for staying out to bat as the rain got steadily harder.
Wisbech batted first and scored 206 for six with Stannard 40, Sam Darlow 38 and Carl Pope 37 among the runs. March’s Adam Wright took three for 51.
March opener Jon Wallis 58 kept one end going and Richard Green stayed the longest at the other end with 27 as they reached 158 for seven at the close.
