JODY TRACKS A GOLDEN DOUBLE

DISABLED cyclist Jody Cundy is looking to achieve the rare feat of striking Paralympic gold in two different sports.
The 29-year-old – who landed golds in the 100m butterfly at the Atlanta and Sydney Paralympics – goes for cycling gold in Beijing next month.
Jody – who rides in the LC2 category as a below-the-knee amputee – will be hot favourite to win the one-kilometre time trial as current world champion and world record holder.
And double gold is a real possibility as he’s also part of the three-man sprint team who are world champions and world record holders.
There will be a strong family contingent supporting Jody, with his mum and dad from Walpole St Andrew, his brother and his girlfriend, his uncle and a cousin and his girlfriend all flying out to Beijing.
Jody is part of the Paralympics GB squad leaving for Beijing on August 30. He takes to the track in the one kilometre final on September 9, with the team sprint event following the next day.
Is he confident? He told the Citizen: “I’m a world champion and a world record holder trying to retain my place.
“Training has been going very well – everything is ahead of schedule and going in the right direction. And I feel there’s more to come from me. It’s all about staying injury and illness free, now.”
He feels the biggest threat to his one kilometre time trial gold will come from the Czech Republic and Spain and says the Chinese will be pressing for team sprint gold.
He said: “The Czech rider was second in the last two world championships and the Chinese are closing on us virtually each week, so the team sprint could be quite a close one, too.”
Beijing will be Jody’s first Paralympics as a cyclist. He switched to cycling in May 2006, having competed in Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004) as a swimmer.
At 29 he’s still on the way up as a cyclist and says: “I was good at swimming, but I’m more naturally talented at cycling and that’s why I have made so much progress.
“There’s more to come from me and I think it would be nice to go out on a high in London in 2012 – that’s my ultimate aim.”
The Paralympics will be covered extensively on BBC television, with the opening ceremony being shown live on September 6, followed by one-hour highlights on television and five hours on-line each day.
Jody races in the one kilometre time trial at 2.30pm China time on September 9. The team sprint takes place at 2.30pm local time on September 10.
The former Marshland High School student now lives in Swansea and is a full-time athlete thanks to support from the Lottery and UK Sport.
Jody has been inspired by the cycling exploits of Chris Hoy and his hero’s triple gold medal performance at the Beijing Olympics has fired him towards a double gold target.
