Let's get fishing!

A massive campaign to get people fishing has been set up by Premier Fisheries UK, the country's biggest collection of waters.
The organisation claims to have 17 of the best fisheries in the UK and they have teamed up with tackle manufacturers Browning and Cotswolds Baits to provide up to 1,500 starter packs in an effort to encourage more people into our sport.
Locally we have some tremendous waters but the only fishery affiliated to Premier Fisheries UK is Dents of Hilgay. They will be involved in the campaign which started on May 1 and finishes on August 31. For more information about what is on at Dents give them a call on 01366-385661.
nYOU would not think we were short of anglers judging by the amount of people that have been fishing our local waters over the past week. I have called in on several and last weekend in particular many were turning anglers away with every peg at the fishery taken. Unfortunately although one or two lakes have fished reasonably well, carp in particular have been preoccupied with spawning.
One exception was Headfen Lakes that produced some fantastic sport in the first round of their Teams of Four event. Top rod on the Snake Pool was Bob Coulson. He fished meat and pellet in the margins to record a match winning 117lb 6oz.
Hotrods star Tim Dabrowa took a comfortable victory on Trevs Pool. He had five chub and seven carp fishing shallow with pellet on the long pole line to record 61lb 7oz. Local rods Blue Boys take an early lead with nine points followed by Tosspots on 13 and Hotrods hold third place with 14.
Result: Snake: 1 B Coulson, Tosspots, 117-6-0; 2 M Bailey, Blue Boys, 105-8-0; 3 D Yardy, Norfolk, 97-4-0. Trevs: 1 T Dabrowa, Hotrods, 61-7-0; 2 S Jackson, Blue Boys, 39-14-0; 3 V Coleman, Tosspots, 31-3-0. Teams: 1 Blue Boys, 9pts; 2 Tosspots, 13; 3 Hotrods, 14.
nIt’s going to be a busy time at Headfen Fishery on Saturday, May 24 – they have two events running parallel on two lakes.
On the Snake Lake they have been chosen to host a round of the Premier UK Youth Masters qualifying event. This event sees anglers from the UK’s 40 top match angling venues qualifying for a 100 peg plus final at Browning Cudmore Lakes in the midlands at the end of August.
The winning angler will win £1,500 of sponsorship and coaching. They will also receive media coverage of their progress in the following months. All anglers taking part will receive some Browning items on the day. The winning angler in each 10 peg section will qualify for the final. The draw will be at 10.30am, fishing noon till 4pm. Cost of entry is £12. All nets will be supplied. All anglers must be 17 or under at August 31.To book a peg in the match phone Marcus on 07971574375
On one of the other lakes they have arranged for the Environment Agency to hold an “INTRODUCTION TO ANGLING EVENT”. This will be an open invitation to anybody who would like to try angling. All tackle, bait etc will be provided and professional angling coaches will be on hand to instruct and help you catch your first fish.
