MARCH 2nd began the defence of their Fenland League title with a win as they came out on top against Wisbech 2nd on Sunday.
Having been set in imposing total by Wisbech off their allotted 40 overs, March reached their target with two and a half overs to spare to win by two wickets.
James Williams top scored for Wisbech with 51 before he was retired out and notable cont
ributions from Dominic Stannard and Charles Baxter, who scored 19 a piece, took them to 154-7.
Captain and opener Steve Wallis made a brisk 26 for March, including five fours, and youngster Daniel Woods made 21 before frequent wickets left March reeling on 83-7.
And that’s what they got when Andrew Wright (40) and David Haselgrave (34 not out) put on 56 in just half an hour. Jordan Morgan hit the winning runs for March.
It was a weekend double for March 2nd after they had beaten Cottenham by four-wickets on Saturday in the Cambs Senior League Division Two.
March fielded first and it only took Stuart Mills a few overs to get his first wicket, followed by another shortly after.
Richard Green bowled a long spell taking 3-54 and Stuart Arnold took 1-20. But the main strike bowler was leg spinner Jake Wenman who got 4-33 off nine overs.
Cottenham were eventually bowled out for 149. March struggled in the early overs, losing two quick wickets, but skipper John Wallis was in good nick, scoring 43.
March eventually reached their target with overs to spare and Nicholls batting well for his 28.
Wisbech 2nds’ defeat on Sunday completed a weekend double of their own, but one they’d rather forget as they fell just 11 runs short of the 136 set by Perkins in the Hunts League Division One – despite a good bowling display and a half century from Gavin Plume.
Lyndon Waters was the star bowler for Town’s second string, taking 4-26 and he was backed up by Matthew Parrin (three for 26) and Charles Baxter (two for 36).
They suffered an early set back in their reply, losing opener Carl Pope for one. Plume steadied the ship with 52 but the side were eventually all out for 125.
Young Jordan Morgan and acting skipper Nick Peck took the plaudits for March 3rd after their opening day win against Fenstanton.
Morgan took 6-22 as the away side were dismissed for 100 and Peck came in at six to score 42 not out. Peck found good support from Jordan Hilliard (13) and Andrew Wright (11no).
Wisbech 3rds bowled Gayton out cheaply with the bowling attack led by John Mallett (4-27) and Paul Strickle (3-33) dismissing the West Norfolk Division Three side for 112.
However, Wisbech fell short of the target scoring just 64 all out with Zac Brown (19) the only player to make double figures.
In West Norfolk League Division Four, Wisbech 4th also tasted defeat despite making 157-7 off their 45 overs away at Hockwold.
Howard Atkins was the mainstay of the innings, scoring 45, and their cause was helped by 41 extras.
Wisbech had Hockwold reeling on 23-6 after some good bowling by Kieran Haynes (3-19) and Nick Pack (3-46).
