Steve Taylor's new-look Wisbech side made a very good first impression with a 2-1 win over Boston Town in their opening friendly of the season on Saturday.
Taylor included three new signings in his starting line-up, with Jamie Thurlbourne, Gary Setchell and Nick Impey, and had teenager Lewis Thompson, who missed most of last season with injury, in midfield.

The Fenmen started well and went ahead after 15 minutes when left back Thurlbourne hit a low shot from just inside the box into the net after Scott Cubberley had set up the opening.

Ten minutes later some more skilful football by the visitors was rewarded when Billy Smith broke down the right and crossed for the unmarked Stuart Ablett to head home.

Wisbech, watched by former boss Dick Creasey, were the dominant side in the first 45 minutes but Chris Horton was called into action to block off a one-on-one situation and then finger-tipped a shot over the bar.

Taylor made several changes at the break and Boston made it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go. Alex Street, taking over from Horton, made two very good saves. Taylor commented: “It was very good team performance. Jamie Thurlbourne showed his class and young Lewis Thompson did well in midfield. It was a very good start for us.”

Wisbech had Stuart Cobb, Mark Jimson, Antony Reeve and Jason Pease missing and will again be forced to field a depleted squad for this Saturday’s friendly against Peterborough Northern Star at Fenland Park.

Lee Day, Stuart Ablett and Nick Impey will not be available, but Taylor is hoping to sign former Cambridge City and Dereham midfielder Stuart King to include in the side.

Taylor, who failed to sign Mark Abbs and Kevin Leggett last week, said: “King is a good midfield player who has been training with us and I am hoping to sign him before the game at Outwell on Tuesday.”

Abbs decided to stay with Haverhill and Leggett received a good offer to remain at Diss.

“Apart from King I have no other new signings in the pipeline at present. I was very pleased with the way we performed on Saturday and am happy with the squad we have at present, “ added Taylor.
