WIMBLINGTON Cricket Club has issued the following statement to the Citizen following our exposure of a hoax ten-wicket claim.
In our July 16 edition the club submitted a match report claiming that bowler Ahmed Anver had taken ten wickets in the match against Fenstanton.

The following week we exposed it as a lie, revealing that Fenstanton had only fielded ten players.

The club said this week: “Following an article published by the local press, W.C.C. wish to apologise unreservedly for any interviews provided by members of the club that indicated that a W.C.C. bowler took all the wickets against Fenstanton on the 12th July 08. They were misleading. The bowler did bowl out the opposition, but they only fielded ten players.

Due to the euphoria of this unprecedented achievement, and on reflection, it was inappropiate to mislead the press and readers, which the club deeply regret.” W.C.C.
