COLIN Varney set a new record for the Fields End Fishery at Doddington when winning Leverington AC's match there.
He broke the previous record by over 10lb with his excellent winning weight of 126lb 11oz.

Drawn on peg 26 he alternated between a margin swim and a long pole line at 13 metres, feeding heavily with pellet and fishing banded pellet. He caught ste
adily up in the water all day.

Wisbech rod Bryan Lakey weighed in 101lb 2oz as runner-up spot, followed by lady angler “Tubbs” Marshall on 79lb 8oz

King of the Fens

THE fourth round of the newly-formed King of the Fens series was fished at the weekend on the South Holland Drain at Holbeach, with the venue fishing well.

Bourne A look likely favourites after taking the runner-up spot on the day and topping the league by three points.

Individual honours and top team spot went to Wades Match Group, with Chris Hardman taking first place from the end peg at Goats Lane, putting an excellent 13lb 6oz to the scales.

Fishing squatt and pinkie over groundbait, he caught skimmers and roach steadily all day.

Leading the chasing pack were Dave Corcoran and Jon Hazeldine. They both had bags of small fish to finish equal second on 12lb 8oz.

Result – 1 C Hardman, Wades MG, 13lb 6oz; jt 2 D Corcoran, Bourne MG and J Hazeldine, Browning Hotrods, both 12lb 8oz; 4 D Page, Peterborough, 12lb 4oz; 5 A Lemmon, Sensas Mark One, 12lb 1oz.

Teams: 1 Wades MG, 21pts; 2 Bourne A, 23; jt 3 VDE and Sensas Mark One, both 28.

League: 1 Bourne A, 11pts; 2 VDE, 14; 3 FM Stanjay, 15; 4 Browning Hotrods, 19.

Fields End Fishery Open

THE regular monthly open on Fields End Fishery, Doddington, saw Stuart Redman taking the top spot from peg 4, putting 93lb 3oz to the scales.

The Fox Match-backed rod fished up in the water with maggot to see off the challenge of Adrian Hunter, who came second with 75lb 6oz, followed by Alan Owen in third place on 61lb 14oz.

Mill View Tackle

The day out to Alders Farm for the Mill View Tackle club proved to be their best match of the year so far, with the top six anglers all breaking into three figures.

Way out in front was commercial carp expert Barry Mason. The March rod is at home on any carp water but, at a fishery like Alders Farm which is heavily stocked with big carp, there are few better anglers in the area.

This match saw him fishing up in the water for most of the day on pellet to record an outstanding 221lb 4oz.

Second place went to Chatteris rod Steve Smalley, who fished pellet and paste for 182lb.

Result: 1 B Mason, 121lb 4oz; 2 S Smalley, 182lb; 3 P Priestley, 143lb 13oz; 4 K Medlock, 124lb; 5 M Kirk, 113lb 14oz.

This weekend’s match sees the March club fishing on the Silver Fish pool at Kingsland Reservoir.

Tydd Gote evening matches

SOME of the area’s top rods are now fishing the popular evening matches at Tydd Gote. On Tuesday evening Alistair Ogilvie took first place with a net of small fish taken on squatt and pinkie for 6lb 12oz. Second place went to Bob Bates with 6lb 1oz, followed by John Spalton on 5lb 11oz.
