Wisbech skipper Gary Freear powered his side to victory over Histon with a magnificent 89 runs at Harecroft Road on Saturday.
This enabled Wisbech to pick up a valuable 25-point haul in the Cambs Tucker League and narrow the gap on Nassington, Burwell, and March, who all dropped points at the weekend.
Wisbech are now just 27 points behind leaders Nassington, who still ha
ve to come to Harecroft Road.
The home side batted first and Freear, coming in after the early loss of Wood, dominated the innings with good support from James Williams 22 and Simon Freear 23.
Then lower down the order Adam Hodson 32 and Craig Johnson 24 kept the runs flowing as Wisbech reached 229 for eight off their 48 overs.
Unusually it was Freear and spinner Johnson who opened the Wisbech attack and the move soon paid dividends as the skipper got a very quick breakthrough.
As Histon threatened to take a grip on proceedings it was the introduction of Williams into the attack that changed things.
He soon picked up two wickets and finished with three for 27, while Freear was three for 32, Johnson two for 30 and Tom Bourne two for 31 as Histon were all out for 162.
Simon Freear said: “It was a good win for us with the teams above dropping points.
“We decied to use the old ball with Gary and Craig opening the bowling, then introduced James Willimas with the new ball and it paid off.
“We did the same thing at Granta earlier in the season and it paid off. Gary batted really well – but it was not a chanceless innings.”
Wisbech’s put up a poor batting performance on Sunday when they lost by 75 runs against Perkins in the Rutland League.
Fielding a much weaker side they were all out for 88 in response to Perkins’ 163 all out. Top scorer was Sam Portham with 32.
Perkins lost two early wickets but recovered well despite some good bowling from Craig Johnson, who took four for 17 off 8.3 overs. Ryan Waterscfhoot took two for 40.
Wisbech Seconds lost by 22 runs against Godmanchester Thirds in the Hunts League on Saturday.
Godmanchester scored 182 all despite the efforts of Lyndon Waters, five wickets for 35, Paul Strickle two for 33 and Charles Baxter two for 25.
In reply Wisbech lost some cheap early wickets despite opener Keith Jakings 18 keeping one end going.
It was left to Strickle 40 and Richard Harnwell 28 to revive their hopes, but they were all out for 160.
On Sunday Wisbech Seconds beat Chatteris by 93 runs in the Fenland League.
Jakings 60 and Dominic Stannard 50 helped Wisbech reach 183 for six off their 40 overs, with Platt the best of the Chatteris bowlers with three for 29 off eight overs.
Chatteris were always strugglig in reply and were all out for 90 with Matt Hollis top scoring with 26. Matt Parrin took three for 19 and Dave Lemoir two for 29.
Wisbech Thirds also had batting problems when suffering a 23-run defeat against Thornham in West Norfolk League Division Three.
