Wisbech enjoy winning warm-up

WISBECH TOWN warmed up in good style for their first game in the Cambs Tucker League on Saturday with two wins at the weekend.
They had a five-wicket win over Downham in a friendly on Saturday when James Williams was in good from with bat and ball.

Downham batted first and were 36-6 at one stage with Williams taking two for 18. But Wisbech then spread the bowling around a
nd Downham reached 143 all out.

Williams top scored with 61 and was ably assisted by skipper Gary Freear on 39 not out as they reached 145 for five.

On Sunday they got their Rutland League season off to a good start with a 38-run victory over Market Overton despite missing James Williams and Gary Freear.

Wisbech reached 188 all out after openers Simon Freear 77 and Ben Allsop had given them a good start. Ian Burgess and Charlie Baxter both hit 20.

Brad Apted 5-47 had the Market Overton batsmen in trouble and Allsop and Matt Parrin also picked up two wickets each as they finished on 150 all out.

Gary Freear said: "It was a good weekend for the team and we are looking forward to Saturday's game against Camden which should prove a real test for us."

New Zealander Dave Bonniface is expected to fly in next week to boost the Wisbech squad.

Wisbech seconds also had two wins at the weekend. They beat Waresley by 52 runs in the Hunts League Division Two and beat Leverington in the Fenland League by 11 runs.

Openers Carl Pope scored 61 and Suraj Karavadra 32 to put on 92 for the first wicket and they reached 172 all out.

Waresley started well in reply but Matt Parrin struck with four for 30 and Tom Bourne two for 13 as the visitors reached 120 all out.

Scott Wylie 68 and Lyndon Waters put on 71 for the fifth wicket against Leverington in a total of 159 for five. Mark Godfrey took three for 14.

Leverington looked to be in a good position for victory but two run outs turned the game and they finished on 148 all out. John Mallett took four for 24 and Waters two for 41.

Leverington's top scorer Phil Medcalf top scored with 43 and Glyn Wilson, making his debut, hit 34.
