The 2013 Angling Times Clubman KO team competition got underway at the weekend, with Townsend Fishery taking on JVAC “A” and “B” sides at Decoy Lakes.

The match looked to be a home banker with the “A” side looking very strong indeed on their home water but my goodness did our local lads put up a great fight. So good in fact that they tied on 19 points each, tied again on section count back points and only lost on the day to weight advantage.

The match took place on a very indifferent Oak Pool which saw several anglers from all sides failing to trouble the scalesman. Top rod was Alan Warren for the host side, he put a cracking 95lb to the scales, all carp taken on the pole and pellet approach.

Then came Townsend rod Ray Cook with 57lb 13oz, followed by Kevin Wilmot on 52lb 3oz and Townsend skipper Colin Begbie with 46lb 9oz. I am sure Townsend went home a little disappointed not to have pulled off the shock result of the round but they did give JVAC a mighty fright with just one fish in the end deciding the tie, so well done to them.

Round One of the Sensas Mark One Spring Carp/Silver series also got under way on Sunday, the first venue used was the Kingfisher Pool at Townsend Lakes. The pool fished well with Josh Pace out in front putting 55lb 10oz to the scales. He caught carp on the pole with pellet and corn, topping them up with close to 20lb of skimmers which fell to a caster approach. Ricky Young came in second with 47lb 10oz, followed by Dave Corcoran with 36lb 5oz, he had the best silver fish weight of 23lb 5oz, which put him joint top of the league after one round with Josh Pace on five points. This weekend they head off to Buttonhole Fishery where carp weights are expected to dominate, but it’s yet another local water full of silver fish so it does give all anglers a chance to regain some ground on the leaders.

Ramsey AS are well into their spring series of matches now, their latest was fished on the Elm Pool at Decoy which saw match organiser John Hazelden taking the honours with a fine 77lb 12oz net of carp taken on the pole with sweetcorn. Pete Holland fished pellet and caster to finish second with a level 77lb followed by Rob Wright on 43lb 8oz.

Buttonhole Fishery is still producing some fine carp weights despite the frosts, in the latest open match Tony Grigorjevs topped the field with a very impressive 138lb 12oz net taken from peg 4. Richard Button came second on 46lb 5oz followed by Andy May with 27lb 5oz.

Oak Pool on the Decoy complex was the first match of the 2013 calendar for Spratt’s AC which saw Colin Varney get straight into the grove topping the field with a fine 83lb 12oz leaving the rest of the field a long way behind. Colin drew peg 21 and took his fish on the long pole with red maggot. Runner-up on 30lb 11oz was John Smith, he fished a feeder netting carp to 4lb followed by Trevor Cousins with 20lb 11oz.

Metal Box were yet another local club fishing their opening match of the year at the weekend on the Cedar Pool. The fishing was hard only two or three fish for most anglers. Winner was Tom Ainsley with 33lb 10oz Runner-up Barry Gibson with 12lb 11oz, Dave Pluck a level 10lb.

Townsend Lakes Fishery Easter Weekend results, Woodpecker Pool: 1 C Begbie, 63lb 6oz; 2 R Young, 46lb 5oz; 3 S Sharp, 26lb 13oz. Cuckoo Canal: 1 A Kinsey, 66lb 4oz; 2 C Begbie, 19lb 8oz; 3 P Pleasant, 19lb.
