Like many other anglers across the area I was a bit surprised to see that the Great Ouse had been chosen to host the Eastern Region Shield match.
But last weekend the venue proved to be more than good enough, despite some poor sections on the Ten Mile Bank overall it held up well. The event drew in teams from across the area but with a very strong local contingent hopes were high that one of them could lift the trophy.
However a strong Maver Image side just squeezed home a win with an excellent 70 point score. Littleport did really well to take the runner-up spot followed by Sensas Mark One.
Result: 1 C Vandervleit, Maver Image VDE, 4kl 950; 2 A Crane, Littleport, 4kl 900; 3 T Nash, Browning Hotrods, 4kl 520; 4 L Darler, Browning Hotrods, 4kl 420; 5 R Whincup, FM Stanjay Gold, 4kl 230; 6 G Welton, RAF Team Mosella, 4k 100.
Teams: 1 Maver Image VDE Black, 70pts; 2 Littleport Blue, 66; 3 Sensas Mark One, 66; 4 Browning Hotrods, 61; 5 Eastern MG, 56.
The very next day on the same venue the East Midland Winter League took place, again many felt that was a bad move.
Yet surprisingly it fished very well and the organiser’s decision to keep it on there was more than justified. Both the Ely and Littleport sections of the Ouse were used for this first round match but all the main action was on the Littleport stretch.
The roach fed well, leading the way home with 15lb 10oz was Gavin Butler. He fished the long pole using pinkie and maggot over groundbait, netting roach and skimmers for most of the day. On the team front Browning Hotrods got off to a flyer taking team honours with a 24 point score. This is going to be a very close league though and I would say there are several teams more than capable of winning a round so I doubt anything will be decided until the very last match.

In the Wednesday match held at Blackdyke Dave Parlett took the honours putting 8lb 10oz of skimmers and roach to the scales all taken on the pole with pinkie. Runner-up was Dick Paul on 6lb 2oz followed by Mick Asker with 5lb 5oz.
Sunday’s match on the same venue saw Dave Parlett again topping the field, with 6lb 12oz to the scales, a net of small fish taken on the whip. There was a tie for the runner-up spot between Carol Davies and Colin Gibbons both weighing in 6lb 6oz.
Wednesday’s match will draw at 9am at Blackdyke while on Sunday the draw time is 11am. The club also have a pike match at Clough Bridge, draw for this one is 8.15am.
Once again Kev Lee topped the Fenland Rods match, there is just no one to stop him this season.
Sunday’s match was on the small Carp Lake at Kingsland Fishery, Turves, Kev finishing well ahead of the field putting a fine 99lb 8oz net to the scales. He did draw well taking his fish on the long pole with meat, most coming in the last couple of hours.
Runner-up with 40lb 5oz was Dave Simpson followed by Mac Campbell with 35lb 1oz.
In the weekend match young Steve Hillman crashed out a fine 212lb 2oz net of carp to break his own lake record, all taken on the pole with maggot. With the weather now turning back to more seasonal averages I very much doubt the record will be broken this year again. Runner-up with 157lb 13oz was Matt Ayres followed by Dave Rodwell with 156lb 2oz.
On Saturday the fishery will be running an Under 21’s match as well as the normal weekend opens.
Manea Juniors, Cuckoo Canal: 1 Joe Flitton, 50lb 4oz; 2 Ed Shepherd, 46lb 15oz; 3 Jordan Tweed, 46lb.
