It all came good for members fishing for the Chatteris Working Men’s Club on Sunday on the Forty Foot Drain with quite a few big fish showing at Bull’s Mill.

Top rod with a net of bream and tench was Mark Dunham, he weighed in 11lb 14oz taken on worm and red maggot. That was just enough to edge Steve Newman into the runner-up spot, he had bream and a few roach to finish with 11lb 4oz. Jack Halverson came in third with 7lb 13oz his catch included a fine tench going to the scales at 7lb 13oz.

The Snake Lake at Headfen Fishery was the venue for the latest Fenland Rods fixture, with the cracking leading weights it looks like a very good match but unfortunately many of the club’s anglers found it tough going. The last time the club fished this venue Dave Garner came out on top and on Sunday he did it again, this time putting a very respectable 256lb 8oz to the scales all caught on a rod and line approach with luncheon meat. Coming second with 83lb 4oz was Mac Campbell, he caught on meat but had to wait until the last couple of hours before the fish moved in. Third place went to Matt Lutkin, he caught on red maggot for 63lb 12oz.

This weekend the club are back at Decoy Lakes fishing the Cedar Pool

It was tough going in the Tuesday Tydd Gote AC match at Harolds Bridge on the North Level Drain, Mick Asker taking the honours with just 1lb 15oz, a net of small fish taken on the whip with pinkies. March rod Bob Fitzjohn came in second with 1lb 2 ½ oz. It was a little better for Thursday’s encounter fished on the same venue, this time 5lb was needed to come out on top, Dave Parlett securing victory with skimmers and perch taken on red maggot. Backing weights were not too good though, Andrew Spencer weighed in 1lb 11 ½ oz for second place followed by Andy Greenwood on 1lb 10oz.

On Sunday the club switched their venue to the Black Dyke which saw Carol Davis topping the field with 5lb 3oz, a net of roach and skimmers taken on the pole with pinkie. Dick Paul came in second with 4lb 14oz followed by Andy Greenwood with 4lb 10oz.

Fixtures for Tydd Gote AC are as follows; Thursday’s match will draw at Main Road at 5.30pm. The Sunday match is a six hour match, draw at Main Road at 11am, fish 12-6.

While one or two waters around the area found fishing difficult due to fish spawning and high winds Townsend Lakes fishery produced some huge weights in the Sunday Open match fished on the Cuckoo Pool. Topping the field with a cracking 229lb 6oz net was venue regular Geoff Arnold. Runner-up on peg 5 was Steven Hillman 204lb 1oz, Brendon Strowlger 198lb 13oz.

Anglers fishing the Tuesday evening open match at Buttonhole Fishery found the fish spawning making it difficult to catch at times. Out in front with a modest 64lb 2oz was John Clark. Runner-up 54lb Matt Bunting, Les Barry 49lb 10oz.

In the latest Buttonhole Qualifier sport improved dramatically Marc Bradford needed 157lb 10oz to top the list, all carp taken on pellet up in the water. Les Barry second, 151lb 8oz; Paul Pleasant 78lb 4oz.

The Six Island Pool at Decoy has become one of the best venues and the latest Spratt’s AC match just confirmed it. Leading the way with 134lb 7oz was Peter Parlett; Colin Varney second 118lb 9oz; Trevor Cousins 113lb 6oz.
