Once again the North Level drain produced some outstanding weights for the Tydd Gote Wednesday match with the in form John Young taking the honours.

Fishing the pole with a pinkie and groundbait approach the local rod finished with 11lb 13oz. That was just too good for the chasing pack, John Taylor finishing second on 9lb 10oz followed by Sammy McSpadden with 8lb 1oz.

The club decided to postpone Sunday’s match because of the March Open. It’s back to normal this week with the Wednesday and Sunday open matches, the draws are at 9am at Clough Treatment Works, fish 10am-3pm.

Michael Buchwalder once again stole the show in the latest March Open fished on the Old Nene putting 27lb 7oz to the scales. He drew well along Nene Parade on the end peg. He fished six metres all day taking roach to six ounces on bread punch. Huntingdon rod Paul Hendy took the runner-up spot he drew close to the Health Centre Bridge taking a net of skimmers weighing 17lb 14oz. Third place went to Mark Pollard with a level 16lb.

The final round of the Maver Bait-Tech Pairs again saw some tremendous weights taken from the River Welland through Spalding. Top rod with 31lb 3oz of roach was Alex Bates, he caught close in on punch and pinkie. Match organiser Wayne Swinscoe came second on 30lb 12oz followed by Dave Burns with 27lb 14oz. Phil Chesterton and Alistair Oglivie again showed their class topping the event.

The win on the day and indeed their weight saw them scoop the league title with a massive 163lb 8oz.

Final result: 1 P Chesterton and A Ogilvie, 162lb 8oz; 2 W Swinscoe and C Jenkinson, 155lb 10oz; 3 T Kaye and R Wootton, 149lb 2oz; 4 P Spriggs and M Roper, 141lb 9oz.

The final round of the closley contested Chateris Angling Club winter league saw Steve Newell out in front, he put 4lb 10oz to the scales, a net of small fish taken on the whip with pinkie. Then came Alan Owen on 3lb 4oz, followed by George Woodley with 2lb 7oz. It was so close at the top but Alan Owen just edged it with 98 points, with Steve Newell second on 97 points and John Roper with 96.

Last Sunday Whittlesey AA held another Pike Pairs match on the Fenland Drains. Winners Fenland rods Ken Edgeson and Brian Hun netted seven fish for a weight of 21lb 7oz. Just behind were local rods Paul Lenton and Steve Francis with four fish weighing 19lb 2oz, third Dick Band and Duane Williams 15lb 9oz.
