The biggest match at the weekend was the Winter League practice match held on the North Level Drain, writes Ken Wade.
Unfortunately the bright weather in conjunction with high pressure saw anglers struggling in a lot of sections.
Not only did the roach refuse to feed in any numbers but the tench and in particular bream also failed to show up. Top rod was March angler Alex Bates. He drew well and made the most of a good draw to finish on 10lb 12oz. Martin Roper came in second on 9lb 7oz, followed by Steve Joy with 9lb 5oz and Ricky Young with 8lb 3oz.
Let’s hope conditions and the venue improve for this coming weekend’s first winter league match or there could be some very unhappy teams trying to work out how to put a decent set of points together. Our local side Sensas Mark One will be looking to get off to a good start and indeed top the league as the word around the angling world is that the final could be split between Decoy Lakes and the Old Nene at March in late February 2016.
It’s been a really busy time for Spratts Angling Club, match secretary Trevor Cousins has been away but I have the latest results in now. On the Kingsland Carp Lake it was Peter Parlett taking the honours with a fine net of carp to 12lb taken off the top with pellet. Mick Raby was second with 107lb 5oz, followed by Mac Campbell with 87lb 1oz.
Mac took the honours on the Willows at Decoy Lakes, topping the field with 125lb 11oz from peg 29 on meat.
Second place went to Mick Raby with 119lb 13oz followed by Martin Parker on 93lb 5oz.
In the latest club match fished on the Yew Lake at Decoy, Peter Parlett was again in pole position. He drew peg 9 and caught some big carp on cat meat from peg 9 for 162lb 3oz. Runner-up was Ted LIoyd on 111lb 8oz and third with 106lb 2oz was Martin Parker.
What a weekend it was for 11 year old Sonny Lynn.
He topped the Tydd Gote club match on Sunday with 6lb 8oz, his catch included a fine tench and it was his first-ever senior match win. Runner-up was Andy Greenwood with 5lb 15oz, followed by Paul Bawden on 5lb 12oz.
In the Wednesday match it was John Young taking the top spot. He put 8lb 2oz to the scales, then came Mick Asker on 7lb 15oz and Andy Greenwood with 5lb 5oz.
In the latest Townsend Lakes open match fished on the Woodpecker pool it was fishery owner Colin Begbie topping the field with 50lb 12oz taken from peg 8. Colin caught on the long pole at the start of the match fishing and feeding pellet.
Late in the match he switched to the margins taking small carp on sweetcorn.
Runner-up on peg 10 was Sam Hawkes. He fished a pole and paste approach for 43lb 14oz, then came Steven Hillman on 31lb 3oz.
