It’s been a really good time in the angling world for our local side Sensas Mark One, writes Ken Wade.

Hot on the heels of individual success last week in the Angling Trust Division One National on the Gloucester Canal they came a very respectable ninth, against the best teams in the country, I might add.

To round off the day team man Alistair Ogilvie put in a great performance to finish runner-up, netting 39kl of bream. I should also mention Browning Hotrods from Huntingdon who went one better, finishing in eighth place.

The eighth Craig Kent Memorial drawn pairs match was fished on the old lake at sun-drenched Kingsland Fishery at Turves. The pairs event was run for the first time this year and proved very popular, Daniel Hall with the day’s top weight of 72 lb was ably backed up by young Ben Darrington who had 53lb 8oz. Runners-up were Matt Clarkson with 68lb 8oz and his partner Adrian Hunter with 43lb 14oz. Shaun Humphrey and Derek Yorke came third.

Paul Yardy won the “Tony Larham Shield” for the biggest fish landed – a carp of exactly 14 lb.

Many thanks to Richard and Theresa at Kingsland, Ray at ukmatchangler.com and to all the others who helped to make the day a great success which saw £400 raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

In the latest Townsend Lakes open match fished on the Woodpecker pool, fishery expert Ricky Young topped the field with 91lb 14oz all caught fishing shallow with pellet. Colin Begbie came in second putting a level 73lb to the scales, he caught on the feeder and pole, Ashley Kinsey was third on 59lb 4oz.
The fishery are hosting their charity match on Saturday to raise money for Macmillan at King’s Lynn hospital – give them a call if you would like to fish.

Metal Box fished their latest match at the Townsends complex on the Cuckoo Canal Pool, winner from peg 20 was Shaun McKenna who put a good net of fish together to weigh in 136lb 12oz fishing the pole close in with expander pellet on the hook. Runner-up was Shaun Buddle on 111lb 4oz. He fished similar tactics to the winner, Ray Green was third on 92lb 6oz.

Buttonhole Fishery produced some much improved action thant of late for the Fenland Rods anglers fishing their club match at the weekend. Way out in front was Dave Garner on peg 4, after a slow start his luncheon meat approach fished close in began to pick up some big fish and by the whistle he was well clear on 161lb 6oz and also walked off with the £72 Golden Peg payout.

Second place went to Mac Campbell, catching on the long pole then meat in the margins for 136lb 2oz. Third place went to Peter Parlett with 77lb, with Bill Foster third on 72lb 3oz.

Spratts AC fished last week on the Oak pool at Decoy Lakes and with the wind whipping down the pool it was no surprise to see the top two fishing the bomb. Out in front was Martin Parker, he caught on the bomb with meat and pellet for 138lb 14oz, then came Terry Tribe fishing sweetcorn for 130lb 3oz. Third went to Trevor Cousins on the opposite bank, finishing on 113lb 3oz.

Still no big weights coming from the Forty Foot Drain in the Chatteris Workingmen’s Club matches but lots more small fish to be had.

In the Wednesday evening match Chris Gubler was top rod on 5lb 4oz, followed by Peter Cornwell with 4lb 1oz and John Roper 3lb 8oz. The Sunday club match at Bulls Mill saw Steve Newell out in front with 6lb 4oz, runner up on 5lb 5oz was Mark Dunham, then came John Roper 3lb 10oz.

Weights are also starting to pick up for those fishing the Tydd Gote club matches. On Wednesday it was John Taylor out in front with a net of small fish taken on the pole with pinkie putting 8lb 7oz to the scales. Runner-up was Kevin Hunt on 7lb 13oz, followed by Mick Asker with 6lb 13oz.

Sam McSpadden topped the Thursday evening match with tench taken on the pole with worm for 13lb 9oz, then came Andy Greenwood on 4lb 4oz. Sunday saw Paul Burben topping the field, he had a tench plus roach for 8lb 5oz. Andy Greenwood took second with 6lb 4oz with Ray Groom third with on 5lb 12oz.

The pairs winners were Burden and Dave Williams.
