There were grave doubts that very few fish were going to be caught in round three of the East Midland Winter League on the River Cam at the weekend after a poor practice match.

Thankfully more fish did turn up but there were still far too many anglers failing to trouble the scalesman. The leading weights look good thanks to a lot of extra water pushing through.

Top individual with 17lb 7oz of chub taken on worm was Toby Pepper, followed by Alistair Ogilvie on 11lb 12oz and Andy Moss 9lb 9oz. Local team Sensas Mark One topped the leader board with 34 points, well clear of the field. Runners-up were Browning Hotrods on 40, just beating Stanjay Gold who had the same points but a poorer weight.

The next round is on the Old Nene at March and we should see a dramatic improvement in catches. Local rod Bob Fitzjohn will be running an Open match on Sunday on the venue, tickets are already going fast so call on 07970 673439 to book.

The British Pike Championship took place on Saturday with the Twenty Foot Drain and Glassmoor Bank in use. Anglers came from across the country to sample the predator fishing. Despite a large local contingent not one of our anglers made the main prize list.

Hinckley angler Darryl Moore took the £1,600 main prize with a brace of fish weighing 36lb 4oz from the Twenty Foot Drain. Runner-up was Tony Billson, 36lb 2oz, followed by Chris Preen on 18lb 2oz.

Townsend Lakes

Considering the two frosts at the weekend weights held up quite well, Rick Young topped the Saturday open match on the Kingfisher Pool with 70lb 2oz, a net of carp taken on the long pole with pellet. Runner-up with 34lb 2oz was Trevor Haycock, Colin Begbie 28lb 13oz.

Sunday’s match results on the Woodpecker Pool: Ashley Knightley 39lb 2oz on long pole and pellet. Ken Clarke 27lb 8oz, Steve Sharpe 25lb 10oz.

Headfen Fishery

It was tough going for the Fenland Rods anglers on Sunday, the consistent Darren Ogden winning with 25lb 12oz. Darren fished red maggot down the middle, the same tactics employed by most of the leading rods. Runner-up 25lb 4oz Tim Bates, Clint Gumbs 25lb, Joe Bedford 22lb. This weekend’s match will be on the Horseshoe Pool at Decoy Lakes.

North Level Drain

This held up well last week, in the Wednesday match Kevin Hunt was first with 12lb 8oz of roach and skimmers taken on the pole with maggot. Runner-up John Taylor 10lb 10 ½ oz, John Young 8lb 15oz. Sunday’s club match: Mick Gamble bagged his first win of the season, 8lb 4oz. Runner-up Dave Sippitts on 7lb 15oz, third 6lb 12oz Colin Gibbons.

The Wednesday and Sunday matches will again be on the North Level Drain, draw at Clough at 9am. Also on Sunday the club will be running an Angling Trust Pike Qualifier, draw is at 8.15am at Clough, contact David Parlett on 01945 463913.

Over the past few weeks John Smith has seen a surge in fortunes. In the Spratt’s AC match fished on the Yew Lake at Decoy John topped a strong field with 98lb 12oz. John fished red maggot close in netting carp to 7lb. Trevor Cousins 89lb 15oz, Peter Spriggs 83lb 15oz.
