The warm weather over the past week saw some cracking action from several of our local waters.
Specimen hunters have been waiting for the chance to test their skills against some really big fish and at Willowcroft Fishery last weekend it gave them the ideal opportunity.
Holbeach rod Andrew Reeves took the best fish of the season so far banking a wonderful 33lb 2oz carp from the Six Island Pool. This fishery has been a regular producer of top quality action over the past couple of years and already looks set for one of its best campaigns ever. For those that enjoy the challenge and have the patience to wait for that one special fish then this really is the place for you.
The fishery details are as follows: Willowcroft Fishery, Seadyke Rd, Wisbech St Mary, Wisbech, Cambs PE13 4SD.
There was a much better turnout on Magpie Lake for the Friday open match. End pegs were an advantage for the first two in the match, but all anglers had double figures even though bites were at a premium for some, perhaps due to the varied weather of late.
The fish have not become fully active just yet, but the warmer weather forecast for this week should help and as news gets around that Roy Whincup is committed to these regular Friday opens more and more anglers are going to give it a go.
Top rod was March angler Martin Kirk, he drew peg 5 and took carp to 5lb on pellet and paste. Runner-up with 34lb 4oz was Gus Gausden followed by Gary Burton on 32lb 4oz.
The tiny Horseways Sluice drain was not in great form at the weekend for the last match of the season, many of the regulars feel the fish have made an early exit into the main river after a spell of relatively mild conditions.
Norman Frear topped the list with a respectable 4lb 15oz but then weights dropped, Tom Boswell took second place on 1lb 4oz followed by George Woodley with 1lb1oz

Wednesday’s match fished at French Drove and with lots of small fish showing most anglers had plenty of bites. Fishing the whip with pinkies was Phil Parnell, he put a level 8lb to the scales for a clear victory. Andy Greenwood came in second with 5lb followed by Dave Sippitts on 3lb 10oz.
Sunday’s club match was back on the North Level Drain at Clough Bridge and again it was small fish that made up the weights topped by whip expert Ray Groom who finished with 5lb 2oz. Simon Sutterby came in second on 4lb 5oz followed by Colin Gibbons with 3lb 13oz.
The biggest match in the area by far was the last March Open fished on the Old Nene. Unfortunately it coincided with one of the sunniest and warmest days of the year bringing boaters out in force making it extremely difficult for some to present a bait properly. As always in these very popular matches though some big weights were recorded topped by Chris Vandervleit who found five big tench, two good perch and around 5lb of roach to record a fine 22lb 6oz winning weight. Runner-up was in the in form Graham Welton with 20lb 1oz of rudd and skimmers followed by Mark Pollard, he had a net of roach from the by pass bridge area weighing in 15lb 6oz.
This year’s Angling Times/Van den Eynde Supercup got underway at the weekend, with a Townsend Lakes team trying to negotiate a tricky first-round hurdle against a strong JVAC side from Peterborough.
Fished at Townsend’s Woodpecker Lake near Upwell, the match saw JVAC win seven out of the eight pairs, with their own Dave Parsons taking top individual spot with 46lb 8oz from peg six. Parsons used long pole with 6mm expander pellet on the hook for his mainly carp catch.
Not far behind was Townsend’s top performer Steve Sharpe with 40lb 12oz, another mainly carp catch taken from the peg next to the winner.
Result: 1 JVAC ‘A’, 9 pts; 2 Townsend Lakes, 15 pts.
Peg-by-peg rundown: JVAC ‘A’ Townsend Lakes: Kevin Wilmot 30lb 4oz, Ken Clark 27lb 5oz, Alan Warren 35lb 5oz, Steve Sharpe 40lb 12oz, Dave Parsons 46lb 8oz, Colin Begbie 30lb 2oz, Jon Preedy 26lb 14oz, Alan Owen 20lb, Andy Gausden 37lb 8oz, Harry Morgan 18lb 10oz, Shaun Coaten 23lb 12oz, Don Burns 13lb 10oz, Colin Varney 30lb 12oz, Ryan Collins 14lb 6oz, Nick Carlton 21lb, Stephen Hillman 16lb.
