A sad end for Joe Warner memorial matches

AN annual memorial football match and fun day that raises money for local youth football teams will not be taking place this year.

Tony Gedge and Kristian Hunns, who organised the Joe Warner memorial matches, have made the difficult decision to discontinue the matches from this year.

Joe Warner, a popular local footballer, died in March 2005 aged 21. His friends organised the match to mark the first anniversary of his death and continued them in the years that followed.

Sally Warner, Joe’s mum, would like to thank everyone who was involved in the matches, particularly Tony and Kristian, without who the matches would not have taken place. She also thanked Fen Regis Trophies for their help.

The annual event raised just over £3,500 for local teams, including Hungate Girls and Peckover School. The money was used to provide new kits and essential equipment for the teams.

The first match raised money for a curved memorial bench that was installed outside Joe’s local pub.
