Home goalkeeper Lea Jordan made a penalty save just after Stocks had scored in the top corner at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium in front of a healthy 381 crowd. Rushden replied through Alfie Taylor on 35 minutes.

This leaves Wisbech in seventh spot with 18 points from 15 games, two points ahead of their visitors.

Joint boss Paul Cousins said: “It was a fantastic goal. We played probably one of the best teams we’ve had here with an understrength side.

“It was very pleasing and we were unlucky not to win it.”

Cousins needed medical treatment on Saturday night after he got elbowed yesterday and two teeth went through his lip.

Joint boss Scott Johnson and utility player Neal Spafford return for last night’s trip to Peterborough Northern Star and Saturday home clash with Long Buckby. as well as Callum Reed who was ill on Saturday morning, and London-based Matt Lunn.

Adam Millson (ankle) is also close to a comeback, while Steve Reid made be unavailable for Saturday.

Tony Battersby faces a ban from the Deeping Rangers home game on Tuesday after his two yellow cards against Sleaford, which Cousins described as “ridiculous, very harsh.

“For the first the goalkeeper threw the ball out one-handed and Tony put up his foot as he’s entitled to do; then he was booked for diving. There was some contact there.”
