Wisbech Town FC captain Paul Cousins is relishing Saturday’s first pre-season friendly fixture at home to King’s Lynn Town - he’s played for both clubs.

The centre-half said a win in this derby could be a springboard for a successful season, as happened last year when Wisbech won at The Walks in the 2012/13 prelude: “If we get the right result, yes, last year it really worked for us.”

He is wary of a backlash, especially as Lynn boss Gary Setchell would not have enjoyed losing to his former club Wisbech.

Cousins added: “Setch will drill it into them that we took the mick out of them at their place.

“They’re two steps up from us and should win but on our day we’re a match for anyone at this level.

“It should be a good crowd and for me playing them, it will be really enjoyable.”

Fenmen boss Steve Appleby confirmed that tall target man Steve Harley signed at the team’s first training session on Tuesday last week.

The experienced front man has played for Thurlow Nunn Premier League sides Norwich United (where he was playing at the end of last season), Mildenhall Town, Walsham Le Willows and Diss Town.

Appleby said: “He can play anywhere along the top. Steve has just become available, and we were definitely interested in him.

“He is six foot three and wins a lot of headers. He is a strong lad and very passionate.

“He is a pain for defenders, upsets other teams and is good for battling with centre-halves.

“I expect some physical games in the UCL and you need somebody like that.

“We lost Chris Bacon after last season and we’re hoping Steve will be a replacement for Chris.

“Hopefully him and Tom James will do the business together.”

Harley is the second pre-season capture after the arrival of forward Tom James.

Appleby said: “At this stage we have got a squad that’s well-capable. At the minute I’m quite happy.

“We need to perform well in pre-season.”
