Northampton Spencer 1 Wisbech Town 2
Fenmen boss Brett Whaley said getting back on the winning trail was more important than the performance.
Wisbech Town had lost 3-1 against Deeping Rangers midweek on top of their disappointing FA Cup exit to another set of local rivals, Holbeach United.
However three points away from home has left them just a point off the top spot in ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division, occupied by Kirby Muxloe.
Goals from recent re-signing Chris Bacon (38 seconds) and Steve Reid (17 minutes) gave the Fenmen a 2-0 lead but the home side pulled one back ten minutes before the break.
Whaley said: “It was the perfect start for us. We’ve had a bad couple of weeks and you obviously want a good start.
“We reacted well and got ourselves ahead early in the game. We worked hard and worked as a team.
“The fact is when you’re not playing well you have to grind out a result.
“We needed to dig in – winning, that was the main thing.”
Billy Smith and Nathan Horne return to the squad for next Saturday’s home game with second-placed Leicester Nirvana at the Elgood’s Stadium.
“It’ll strengthen us for one of the form sides in the league,” added Whaley of the duo.
Of Nirvana he commented: “I think they will stay up there. They’re a very settled side and I envisage they will be up there.
“I think people read too much into our early form. We’re still rebuilding. They will give us an indication of where we are.”
