Debenham 0, Wisbech Town 2

The Fenmen came out comfortable winners in their first of two meetings against the Ridgeons Premier Division’s bottom club in eight days on Saturday.

It was not the best of games played on a dry and bumpy pitch from the spectators’ point of view but Wisbech did have the chances to have run out more empathic winners.

In the first half Ash Stevens had two very good chances to put Wisbech ahead but eventually found the target after 60 minutes from close range after good work from Darren Jimson.

Stevens and Callum Reed had opportunities to increase that lead but it was not until the 90th minute that Jimson put a lid on the proceedings with some good footwork before adding the second goal from outside the area.

Wisbech remain in fifth place but are eight points behind the fourth placed side Mildenhall with two games in hand.

Manager Steve Appleby said: “We tried to play football on difficult conditions which was not easy but in the end it was three points we came for.

“I always felt confident we would win once we got the goal but with just a slender lead it is always in the back of the mind that they might come up with a goal with a long shot especially as they had some big lads out there.

“Olly Gale did very well in his first start.”

Wisbech: Lea Jordan, Simon Flanz, Anthony Reeve, Jon Fairweather, Scott Johnson, Callum Reed, Paul Jones, Lewis Thompson, Olly Gale, Ash Stevens, Darren Jimson. Subs used: Adam Weston, Andy Furnell, Matt Lunn.

Defender Jon Fairweather will miss Saturday’s home game against Debenham through work commitments but Appleby is hopeful that the injured Stacy Cartwright will be fit enough to return to the squad.

On Easter Monday Wisbech are at home to Newmarket who they have already beaten in the league and FA Vase away this season. Fairweather will be back for this game.
