Great Yarmouth 2

IT was only a goal from Scott Johnson two minutes from time that finally settled this Ridgeons Premier Division game in Wisbech’s favour at the Tom Woods Beers Fenland Stadium on Saturday.

Manager Steve Appleby said: “I was grateful for the three points but we made hard work of it. We have to perform a lot better than that and I let the players know how I felt after the game.

“We gave away two sloppy goals and quite honestly Yarmouth could have gone to won it in the second half but for some good saves from Lea Jordan.

“I am not sure we deserved the three points.”

The Fenmen started the game well enough and should really have had a goal early on but it was the seaside club who took the lead on 18 minutes.

A mistake by Jordan allowed Yarmouth forward Jake Reed to get a foot to the ball just as he was collecting and he then put the ball into an empty net. Jordan complained he had his hands on the ball but the referee turned him away.

But Wisbech responded well with Andy Furnell equalising four minutes later with a header from a Simon Flanz cross and after 32 minutes the Fenmen were in front with Ash Stevens adding a second goal.

Wisbech were well on top now with Callum Reed pulling the strings but just could not make the most of the chances and increase their lead.

They were made to pay early in the second half when Wisbech failed to clear their lines and the visitors equalised when Jordan parried a shot and Norman scored.

The goal gave Yarmouth the impetus but Jordan produced three very good saves twice tipping goalbound efforts over the bar with his fingertips and some stubborn defending denied them any further goals.

Appleby even made a triple substitution to try and brighten things up but just when it looked like another home draw Johnson volleyed home after Cousins had flicked the ball on at a free kick.

Wisbech: Lea Jordan, Simon Flanz, Paul Cousins, Anthony Reeve, Stacy Cartwright, Callum Reed, Paul Jones, Lewis Thompson, Scott Johnson, Andy Furnell, Ash Stevens. Subs used: Dan Fysh, Tommy Treacher, Darren Jimson.
