Fenmen pay penalty after losing lead

Huntingdon Town 3,

Wisbech Town 2

The Fenmen lost a 2-1 lead as Huntingdon hit back to do a quick double over the away side on Saturday.

The Fenmen went behind early on but were 2-1 up on 47 minutes, including a first goal for the club by Ewan Clarke in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division.

In an improved performance Wisbech Town hit back with a bizarre 42nd minute own goal plus a header from forward Clarke.

However the hosts won it with a penalty conceded by Wisbech captain Paul Cousins.

Cousins said: “It’s a far better performance but we’re still a couple of players short.

“They went one up which was really down to poor marking and goalkeeping.

“We pulled one back by just pressing and pressing. Their centre-half was involved with their goalkeeper and Danny White.

“The keeper tried to clear and the ball ricocheted off the centre-half.

“We started brightly in the second half and Ewen got his header. We were on top and could have won it 3-1. They got a sloppy goal then I came on and gave away a penalty for handball.

“I went up for a header, when you’re arm is in the air, and I got a massive push in the back.”

Cousins is speaking to Matt Lunn in order to try and get the forward to commit to a few more games.

Lunn is relocating after getting a new teaching position.

“Matt had a place sorted last week but the bloke he is renting off said he is selling the house now. I will try and have a word to get him to play on Saturday,” said Cousins.
