Wisbech Town Football Club have been quick to scotch rumours that the playing budget has been cut.

The Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division club yesterday (Thursday) released the following statement:

“In the light of rumours circulating on the internet, WTFC Chairman Barry Carter and Vice-Chairman David ‘Snips’ Parsons have issued the following statement:

‘The decision to release three of the playing staff last week was a purely managerial one taken by Steve Appleby and was in no way done for budgetary or financial reasons. Steve’s budget is the same now as it was at the start of the season and will remain the same until the end of the current season.’”

Midfielders Deakan Napier and Rogan McGeorge and top-scoring striker Dubi Ogbonna were released by boss Appleby recently.

Since then Appleby has signed free-scoring forward Joe Jackson - who scored on debut at Ely this week - and re-signed wide man Callum Reed.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the Fenmen host Norwich Utd, 3pm.
